All Council Officers are AIH members who have committed to the management of the Institute. The officers have the option to manage a portfolio of their interest. They are dedicated to their roles working within our professional organisation framework.
All officers have a good understanding of the horticulture profession in its broadest sense.
Importantly the National Council officers are committed to the future of AIH and ensure our strategic plans are carried forward.

Alan Burnell MAIH RH is President of the Australian Institute of Horticulture (AIH) and a highly respected horticultural professional with more than 50 years of experience across the nursery, landscape and urban greening sectors.
Originally from England, Alan’s career has taken him from production nurseries and glasshouses to New Zealand forests, Australian wholesale nurseries, international plant hire businesses and major landscape projects. A graduate of Massey University in New Zealand with a Diploma of Horticulture in Nursery Management, he has owned and managed production nurseries, worked as a horticultural consultant, specialised in advanced tree brokering and establishment, and delivered landscape projects throughout Australia and overseas.
As AIH President, Alan is committed to advancing the horticulture profession through education, collaboration and advocacy. He is a passionate champion for urban green infrastructure and the vital role horticulture plays in creating healthier, more sustainable and resilient communities. Through his leadership, Alan continues to promote professional excellence while inspiring the next generation of horticulturists.

Alan Burnell

Andrew Prowse FAIH RH is an award-winning landscape architect and Design Director with more than 30 years of experience in tropical landscape design, resort landscapes, master planning and luxury residential gardens. Based in Cairns, Queensland, Andrew has built a distinguished career delivering landscape projects across North Queensland and beyond.
His extensive portfolio includes the Cairns Performing Arts Precinct, where he designed the public realm in collaboration with CA Architects and Cox Architecture. The project received Queensland’s Minister’s Award for Urban Design. Andrew has also contributed to the transformation of Munro Martin Parklands and co-designed key features of the Chinese Friendship Garden, including its lakeside pavilion and Moon Gate.
A Fellow of the Australian Institute of Horticulture and the current Vice President of AIH, Andrew is committed to professional excellence and the important role of horticulture and landscape design in creating distinctive, sustainable and enduring places.

Matt Mitchley MAIH RH is a registered horticulturist, landscape professional and passionate advocate for prehistoric plant conservation, based in Cairns, Queensland. As founder and owner of The Designer Garden Company, Matt has built a successful career designing and creating residential and commercial landscapes across the Far North.
His passion for rare and ancient flora led to the creation of The Jurassica Project, a unique garden showcasing an extensive collection of endangered prehistoric plants, now located on a 50-acre property. Matt continues to conserve and display remarkable plant specimens, many rescued from clearing projects and waste sites.
A former Secretary of the Australian Institute of Horticulture, Matt served from 2017 to 2022 and is currently Vice President. His work has been featured nationally on ABC’s Gardening Australia, while his horticultural expertise extends to community events, garden tours and tourism initiatives. Matt is committed to sharing the wonder of plants and promoting the importance of horticultural conservation.
