Vale – Stuart Pittendrigh

It is our sad duty to advise that one of our outstanding industry professionals, Stuart Pittendrigh FAIH, passed away at 3.30pm on 11 December 2024.

Stuart was small in stature but a giant in our profession of horticulture as well as landscape architecture.

A distinguished horticulturist and landscape architect, Stuart made an extraordinary impact over his career spanning more than 50 years. From his major international projects to his influential role in Australian urban green space, Stuart’s expertise was unparalleled.

His contributions include the award-winning Barangaroo Reserve and numerous consulting roles with various governments. A revered figure in the field, Stuart’s dedication, meticulousness, and continuous pursuit of excellence have left a lasting legacy.

His commitment extended beyond professional achievements to his community and church, supported by his wife, Jan. Stuart Pittendrigh’s career reflected the high standards and deep passion that define our profession.

He was recently honoured with the Australian Institute of Horticulture (AIH) Lifetime Achievement Award. Upon hearing about his award he was so thrilled and immediately made plans to attend the award presentation. Unfortunately, he fell ill and was unable to attend in person.

Just over two weeks ago Wayne Van Balen FAIH was at Stuart’s home doing some jobs in the garden and he insisted on helping out as a labourer while Wayne carried out the tasks.  Ever passionate about our industry, he spent most of the time discussing important professional development topics for AIH to explore.

He was a mentor, advisor, and friend to many of us and has been described as one of the greatest horticulturists of our time. He never ceased to give back to our profession.

We will deeply miss him and are inspired to uphold the high standard of professionalism he exemplified.

I am sure you will all join with us in offering his wife Jan, daughters, grandchildren and extended family our deepest condolences.
