Australian Institute of Horticulture Inc. Awards

To further our mission to promote horticulture and its practitioners the Australian Institute of Horticulture (AIH), and our award sponsors, recognise the contributions of individuals and organisations whose personal initiative and achievement define outstanding performance in their field. 

Our awards represent various categories including, but not limited to, horticultural projects, publications, innovative educational programs, products and services.

The AIH Australian Council may also present our Honour awards to an exemplary practitioner, educationist, media personality and/or institute supporter.

Please don’t hesitate to nominate recipients for our awards as AIH is very proud to honour all our great Australian and International Horticulturists. 

AIH Australian Horticulturist of the Year

AIH Members Only

The AIH Australian Horticulturist of the Year (HOY) is an award that offers a unique opportunity to publicly recognise an outstanding AIH member. By profiling the excellence of AIH members in this way it is hoped to both inspire and challenge horticulturists in their practice and to promote their skills and achievements to the public. This Awardee is recognised for their outstanding contribution to a horticultural project of merit, including horticulture education or horticulture media.

Presentation of the Award will be at the 2024 AIH Annual Conference & Awards Event on Friday 25th October 2024 at The Link in Coffs Harbour NSW

Who can be nominated?

This Award is open only to AIH Horticulturists, Registered Horticulturists, Corporate members and Retired Members.

Judging Criteria

Nominations will be judged upon the following broad criteria:

  •  Originality, innovation or quality of horticultural work,
  • Meeting the client’s brief,  
  • Meet community, environmental & social considerations,  
  • Large projects, small projects or parts of projects are equally eligible,  
  • Judging will be on horticultural merit & not related to the scale of the project.  
  • Awardees will agree to be an AIH Ambassador or assist AIH as key personnel for 12 months post the award.

AIH Award Of Excellence

AIH Members Only

Presentation of the Award will be at the 2024 AIH Annual Conference & Awards Event on Friday 25th October 2024 at The Link in Coffs Harbour NSW

The Australian Institute of Horticulture, Award of Excellence, is awarded by the AIH Council in recognition of innovative horticultural achievement.

Who can be nominated?

This Award is open only to AIH Horticulturists, Registered Horticulturists, Corporate members and Retired Members. This award can be self-nominated but requires an additional nominator.

Judging Criteria:

  • This nominee will have demonstrated consistent achievement in an horticultural field that may include projects that have high horticultural value including education and media.
  • This may be one or more horticultural projects, activity, software or other horticultural accomplishment that has the potential or demonstrated value to the horticultural industry.

AIH Australian Horticultural Student of the Year

AIH Members & Non-members

Nominations closing date is Wednesday 17th July 2024.

Presentation of the Award will be at the 2024 AIH Annual Conference & Awards Event on Friday 25th October 2024 at The Link in Coffs Harbour NSW

This award is given to a horticulture student in Australia who has shown exceptional talent in their studies and/or contribution to the community. It is sponsored by the AIH Fellows Group. 

Who can be nominated?

The Award is open to all students currently undertaking or recently completed an acknowledged Certificate III level qualification in Horticulture with any University, TAFE or Training Organisation and is available to all students with no age barrier, be a current full or part time student – or have graduated in the past 12 months.

Nominations must be through the student’s educational institute. Self-nominations will not be accepted.

Judging Criteria:

  • A student who has shown that their input into the industry will provide benefits to the Horticulture industry.
  • Shown a strong interest in the study of horticulture that has extended their current knowledge and expertise.
  • Judging will be on horticultural merit and graduate’s success.

Submission Information:

Before entering support must be sought from the horticulture teacher/trainer or College Principal to enter the Award.

Teacher/Trainer Referee Report – At least one referee report – to include:

  • Student’s innovation and commitment to the industry,
  • Quality of horticultural skills and knowledge,
  • Diversity of the student’s skills and knowledge.

AIH Green Space Awards

AIH Members & Non-members

Nominations closing date is Wednesday 17th July 2024.

Presentation of the Award will be at the 2024 AIH Annual Conference & Awards Event on Friday 25th October 2024 at The Link in Coffs Harbour NSW.

The AIH Green Space Awards are divided into five categories:

URBAN
RESIDENTIAL
INTERNATIONAL
REGIONAL
COMMUNITY

Awarded to green projects that use horticulture in its design for the purpose of the improvement or provision of open green space and human health and well-being.

Who can be nominated?

Open to all nominees as individuals, corporations, groups, cities and towns and products. This award can be self-nominated but requires an additional nominator.

  • Originality, innovation or quality of horticultural work.
  • Community, sustainability, environmental and social considerations and benefits.
  • Judging will be on horticultural merit and not related to the scale of the project.

AIH Award Of Merit

AIH Members & Non-members

Nominations closing date is Wednesday 17th July 2024.

Presentation of the Award will be at the 2024 AIH Annual Conference & Awards Event on Friday 25th October 2024 at The Link in Coffs Harbour NSW,

The AIH Award of Merit is awarded by the AIH Council in recognition of an innovative horticultural product or service. 

Who can be nominated?

The Award is open to all horticulturists or horticultural related entities. Members of related professional organisations are encouraged to nominate for the award. This award can be self-nominated but requires an additional nominator.

Judging Criteria:

  • The nominee will have contributed to the development or operation of a significant or unique horticulturally based activity of benefit to the horticulture profession.
  • The activities may include a specific horticultural project, activity, product, service, software, published material, social media or other horticultural accomplishment that has potential or demonstrated value to the horticulture industry.
